Wrestling Journalism: State 2013

Iowa State Wrestling 2013

This weekend I have been provided a unique opportunity to follow the Clinton Wrestling team (for KROS AM 1340 radio) as they pursue individual state titles at five weight classes.  This will be a slight departure to what I usually have been covering in my blog, but I will try to retain many of the elemental, stylistic, and narrative approaches.  I'll have try to have stories, interviews, pictures, and results that I will post and link to twitter and Facebook.

Tournament Schedule
Thursday Feb 14: 2:00pm - 5:15pm
Friday, Feb 15: 9:00am - 1:30pm; 8:30pm - 9:35pm
Saturday, Feb 16: 10:00am - 2:15pm; FINALS: 6:00pm

Live air reports (AM 1340 KROS):
Thursday, Feb 14 - 4:15pm
Friday, Feb 15 - 10:17am, 11:17am, 12:17pm, and taped recaps after 4:15pm
Saturday, Feb 16 - 10:17am and 12:17pm

You can find live updates on my twitter handle: @kellenschnee

The first installment is five questions I asked our five qualifiers.  Think of it as a very informal, get-to-know your River King wrestler.

I hope you'll follow and support not only my writing, but the journey of these young student athletes!

Thanks,
KRS

5X5: Five questions answered by five CHS wrestling state qualifiers

#5 HUNTER GENCO 120lbs (JR, 32-5)

What is your favorite food to eat after a weigh-in and why?
I like to drink chocolate milk and have a Philly cheese steak sub, or our state “Rock Fuel.”
What was one of the funniest or most enjoyable things that happened this season?
My favorite thing to do during every season is talking crap to the heavyweights.

What animal best represents your wrestling style?
The animal that best represents me is a Honey Badger because I can always pull an upset.

What is part of your pre-meet/tournament routine that you always do/wear?
I always wear my Clinton wrestling shirt from 2000.  My brother wore it when he wrestled and now I wear it.  The shirt looks like it was run over by a boat.

What’s the match/dual this year that was the most fun or exciting for you?
Beating Travis Willers who was ranked #2 in the state, because I had never beaten him in my eleven years of wrestling.

#3 ALEX CALDWELL 145lbs (JR, 29-7)

What is your favorite food to eat after a weigh-in and why?
My favorite meal to eat after weigh-ins is steak, eggs, and toast from Perkins.

What was one of the funniest or most enjoyable things that happened this season?
My most memorable moment was when I realized I was going to be a 2x state qualifier.  Making it to the “big show” is one of my greatest accomplishments.

What animal best represents your wrestling style?
The animal the best represents my wrestling style is a bobcat.  They are relaxed until the want to eat.  When they become hungry they are very agile and aggressive with a lot of power and can take on anything.

What is part of your pre-meet/tournament routine that you always do/wear?
My ritual stays the same for the most part.  I warm-up and drill the same way, I run a few sprints before my match to stay loose.  My thoughts on superstitions have changed.  I’ve learned that it’s not what you wear, but how you prepare, and I feel prepared for this week.

What’s the match/dual this year that was the most fun or exciting for you?
My favorite dual of the year is when we upset Assumption High School.  They were ranked in the state and in the nation, but our hard-nosed team came out and battled all night.  My heart was racing from the beginning of the night until the next day at school.  Everyone was congratulating me and it was a great feeling.

#3 DUSTIN CALDWELL 152lbs (JR, 30-6)

What is your favorite food to eat after a weigh-in and why?
I love to eat steak and eggs after weigh-ins, because they are two of my favorite foods.

What was one of the funniest or most enjoyable things that happened this season?
My favorite moment was finding out that we had won against Assumption.  (The meet was tied after the final weight class and was decided based on criteria.)

What animal best represents your wrestling style?
The animal that best represents me is a black rhinoceros.  They are small, compact, strong, and very underestimated creatures.

What is part of your pre-meet/tournament routine that you always do/wear?
I always wear my Captain America clothing no matter what!

What’s the match/dual this year that was the most fun or exciting for you?
Beating Assumption because the gym was packed, and we knocked of the number two-ranked team in the state.  It was a great feeling.

#9 DILLION CHASE 160lbs (SO, 31-10)

What is your favorite food to eat after a weigh-in and why?
My favorite food to eat after a weigh-in is my aunt’s special wraps she makes for me.

What was one of the funniest or most enjoyable things that happened this season?
The most enjoyable times were after a Saturday tournament we go to J&D Steakhouse and then a group of us went up to Curtis’s (Ilg) house.

What animal best represents your wrestling style?
The animal that best represents my wrestling style is a spider monkey.

What is part of your pre-meet/tournament routine that you always do/wear?
One thing I always do is get my ankle bands on before my opponent.  I think it’s an OCD thing.

What’s the match/dual this year that was the most fun or exciting for you?
The most exciting dual of the year was the dual we won against Assumption.

JUSTIN GUILLIAMS  195lbs (FR, 26-14)

What is your favorite food to eat after a weigh-in and why?
I like to drink chocolate milk and eat fruit, and it’s great fuel.

What was one of the funniest or most enjoyable things that happened this season?
Anything involving the “Grown Man Club.”

What animal best represents your wrestling style?
A silverback gorilla.

What is part of your pre-meet/tournament routine that you always do/wear?
I like to stay loose and steadily add layers to get warm.

What’s the match/dual this year that was the most fun or exciting for you?
When we upset against second ranked Assumption.  It was the best feeling ever!
